Food is a vital component of successful road trips. The drive can take the whole day and sometimes extend to multiple days. With all of the preparations that need to be done beforehand, it can be tempting to simply drop by fast food shops and rely on their less than ideal fare. This would lessen the burden on logistics but it would also be an unhealthy choice for you and the family. A better way to go about it is to make easy to prepare road trip snacks that are both nutritious and delicious. Here are some ideas:
A big bag of chips is surely convenient but the amount of salt and other undesirable ingredients in them can be deal breakers. Instead of junk food, go for natural snacks like mixed berries. Buy different varieties like strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, and others that are available. Place them inside sealed plastic containers to keep them fresh and protected. Just pen one and pass around whenever people feel like having something to eat. It’s a grab and go affair that takes almost no time at all. An alternative would be raisins and nuts which are often used by hikers as trail mix.
Popcorn doesn’t have a good reputation because of all the artificial flavors usually associated with over-the-shelf products. Yet it isn’t really bad in itself. Strip away all of those additives like butter, salt and sugar. What’s left is plain popcorn that is actually nutritious by itself. Anyone can make their own at home quite quickly. Some stores might also have them. Eat these as is for snack or mix in some parmesan if you wish to get some flavor in.
Yogurt with Granola
Another good snack is yogurt topped with granola bits. Just purchase your favorite brand of yogurt and have them ready for road breaks. Open them and add granola for texture. Cereals may be used as substitute. Great for early morning or late afternoons on the road when there’s a craving for something a bit sweet yet satisfying.
